Terceira Island is one of the main points of entrance in the Azores. Together with Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial islands they form the Archipelago Central Group.
It’s the most eastern island of the five central islands and its nearest island is São Jorge.
The highest point on the island, at 1021 m altitude, is located in Serra de Santa Bárbara.
As far as the population is concerned, it has around 56 437 (2011 data) inhabitants, being the second island more populated.
Angra do Heroísmo is an azorean city located on Terceira island south coast.
The city is limited on the northeast side by Praia da Vitória, being surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean in different directions.
Angra is the historical capital of Azores and is here where the religious center is held.
Angra do Heroísmo history and its important role during the Discoveries as support harbor for the vessels coming from the New World, led to its classification as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, on the 7th of December 1983.
The third stop in the archipelago to be recognized by Portuguese navigators, probably around 1420, started to be known as Jesus Christ Island.
The later renaming to Terceira (the third) takes into account the order of the previous discoveries, Santa Maria and São Miguel.
In the 14th and 15th centuries, the relevance of Angra Bay is notorious as an internal trading point, and an intercontinental stopover for the ships that crossed the sea between Europe and the Americas and India.
Angra city was founded in 1534 and became the Azores political, economic and religious center. Due to this international relationship, there were a lot of o gold, silver, and precious stones, not to mention exotic spices, passing by. This brought to the island the attention of pirates and corsairs, mostly English.
In 1580, Filipe II, the Spanish king ascended to the throne of Portugal. The locals supported the intentions of D. António, Prior do Crato, the Portuguese candidate.
Spain tried to take over the island by attacking Salga bay in 1581. This resulted in their defeat on the famous Salga Battle, where bulls were sent over the Spanish soldiers.
Two years later, the Spanish try again, and this time they to succeed on dominating the island, in Mós Bay.
Later on, in 1640, Portugal regains its independence and Terceira solidifies its central position in the archipelago.
The locals’ bravery spirit is tested again during the Portuguese Civil War. The majority of the locals supported the liberal cause and reacted against the absolutist domain, already comfortably installed elsewhere. In 1829, a fierce naval battle ended with the defeat of the absolutist troops that disembarked on Praia beach.
Later on, during the Second World War, the British were allowed to set up a military base near Praia da Vitória, that further on became part of the North American Air Force.
The well-known and still operating Lajes Base brings new influences to the local inhabitants. Conscious of its historical past full of great achievements, Terceira remains today a dynamic island in the context of the archipelago. Its historic center was recognized in 1983 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
